On April 10, the teachers of Louisburg High School reached the end of their Biggest Loser  weight loss competition that began on Jan. 9th to start the new year. The teachers who entered the competition were set out to lose as much of their body weight as possible. This is the seventh year the competition has taken place.

Brian Weilert, English, speech, debate, and forensics teacher took first, Patty Sauber, counseling secretary and head of The Biggest Loser competition took second, and Bernadette Stevens, science teacher, took third.

Although the competition was competitive, some teachers didn’t enter to win, but instead to improve their own lifestyles and make healthier choices.

Stevens spoke about some of the choices she made to get closer to her personal goals.

“Drink more water, and avoid unhealthy snacks… stay away from chocolate,” Stevens said. “Even with a busy schedule, being more self-aware can make a difference”.

Stevens ended up losing 7.57% percent of her body weight and plans on participating in the competition again next year.

“It makes me feel good to encourage the other competitors in positive way,” Sauber said. “The competition is a great motivator to rid myself of those extra holiday pounds”.

Placing second in the competition, Sauber lost a total 10.27% of her body weight.

First placer, Weilert, lost a whopping total of 30 pounds, 12.15% of his body weight.

As many of the competitors had different strategies to lose weight, Weilert’s strategy was, “If you can’t pronounce it, don’t eat it.”

“[This competition enables you] to feel better about yourself and become more active,” Weilert said.

Although the teachers at LHS took the competition very seriously, they still had a little fun while doing so.

“Watching Pickman give up and eat donuts motivated me,” Weilert said. “I never realized he was so weak-spirited.”

How’s that for a little friendly competition? Congrats to all the teachers who participated in The Biggest Loser.
